Poor Posture

There is no doubt that good posture is essential for good health. However, we only realized the effect of poor posture when we see it formed as a result of bad habits carried out over and over again. What’s worse, only few people have a real grasp of the importance and necessity of good posture.

What is posture and Why is good posture important?

Posture is the position in which we hold our bodies while standing, sitting, or lying down. A good posture is when a proper balance is achieved between optimum muscle tension from the body against gravitational force. Without posture and the muscles that control it, we would simply fall to the ground. Throughout the human musculoskeletal system, ligaments are important to hold the bones/joints together, while muscles contract to move the joints thereby cause movements of our body parts. Certain muscle groups, especially the postural muscles contract to help us to maintain a good posture without us consciously thinking about it.

When we are able to do things is a good posture; may it be standing, walking, sitting or lying down, we are minimizing postural strain to the supporting muscles, ligaments and joints. Weight bearing joints are more susceptible to injury and degeneration when they are being stressed in a poor posture.

Therefore, correct posture:

  • Helps us keep bones and joints in correct alignment.
  • reduce abnormal wearing of joint surfaces that could result in degenerative arthritis and joint pain.
  • minimizes the stress on the ligaments holding the spinal joints together, minimizing the likelihood of injury.
  • allows muscles to work more efficiently, allowing the body to use less energy and, therefore, preventing muscle fatigue.
  • prevent muscle strain, overuse disorders, and even back and muscular pain.

On the flip side, poor posture can lead to excessive and repetitive strain on our postural muscles.

Can Chiropractic to improve and correct your poor posture?

In a word, yes. Remember, however, that long-standing postural problems will typically take longer to address than short-lived ones, as often the joints have adapted to your long-standing poor posture.

In order for a person to adopt and maintain a proper posture, one must have adequate muscle flexibility and strength, normal joint functions and motions in the spine and other body parts, as well as good postural muscles that are balanced on both sides of the spine. Recognition and self-consciousness about your postural habits at home and in workplace is vital.

Our Chiropractor specialize in Chiropractic Biophysics, the most researched chiropractic technique that emphasizes optimal posture and spinal alignment as the primary goals of chiropractic care while simultaneously documenting improvements in pain and functional based outcome. Various treatment methods are used to improve spinal joints flexibility to assist you in correcting your improper posture and obtain an optimal posture.
