Throbbing headache is a sensation of pounding, pulsating, rhythmic, or explosive pressure in the head. As the name suggest, it is very likely that it is related to arteries and something of a vascular origin. Also, it can affect all or just a portion of your head. People with migraine, caffeine withdrawal, and hangovers often experience migraine headache. While is is very common and can affect people of any age group and population, a throbbing headache can occur with a wide variety of other conditions.

Less common but serious conditions associated with vascular headache:
  1. Temporal Arteritis –  This is a vascular headache with blockage of the blood vessel and can lead to sudden blindness.
  2. Hypertensive Headache – It is a vascular headache arising from high blood pressure.
  3. Meningitis – acute inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, known collectively as the meninges.
  4. Brain Tumor
  5. Bleeding in the brain
  6. Stroke
Conditions commonly that may associated with Throbbing Headache: 
  1. Migraine
  2. Cluster Headache
  3. Sinusitis
  4. Stress Headache

While there are many conditions that can cause a headache, Migraine and Sinusitis are the most common cause of throbbing headache seen and experienced in Singapore. Hence,one simple way to compare between the two is that sinusitis usually cause headache at the location of the sinuses. On the other hand, throbbing headache is almost always felt only on one side of the head for migraine sufferers. This classic throbbing headache in migraine usually spread over from the back of head to the front, sometimes to the back of the eyeball. Associating with a migraine headache are symptoms like nausea, vomiting, light and sounds sensitivity.
